Electric Handpieces

There are basically two types of handpieces, air-driven and electric. Air-driven handpieces use compressed air to rotate a turban at 200,00-400,000 rpms, using a dental bur as a "chisel" to cut away your tooth.  Electric handpieces have a small motor that converts an electric signal into torque, using a dental bur in a "shaving" fashion.  These handpieces operate at a much lower rpm, so they are smoother, quieter, and cause much less post-op sensitivity.  This is because the generate far less heat than tradtional air-driven handpieces.
